The role of fear in HIV prevention
14th annual CHAPS Conference (C14), Manchester, 9th - 10th March 2011
Speakers: Adam Bourne of Sigma Research and Matthew Hodson of GMFA
In recent years there have been repeated calls from the media and from some commentators in the UK for harder-hitting and fear-arousing messages about HIV. This talk explored the evidence relating to the effectiveness of fear-based campaigns and considered the adverse consequences that can arise when people become fearful. It also considered the impact of the ongoing debate about fear on the development of campaigns across the HIV sector and the broader ethical and political implications of fear-based campaigning.
