What’s the point of HIV prevention?

British Psychological Society, Faculty of HIV & Sexual Health Conference, London, 24th September 2010.

Speakers: Ford Hickson

This talk considers the unspoken goals behind intervening on gay and bisexual men's sexual behaviour in the name of reducing the number of HIV infections occuring. Three versions of the epidemic are presented: a stigmatising narrative in which HIV risk is the property of other people; a public health narrative in which HIV risk is shared by the entire population; and a community narrative in which HIV risk is both shared by the population and is balanced by desires and needs for living.
