Dr. Adam Bourne worked for Sigma Research from 2008 to 2017, before leaving to take up a new post at the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society at La Trobe University in Melbourne. He will continue to work with Sigma on a range of existing and future projects. His research interests focus on sexual health and HIV prevention need among marginalised populations, as well as harm reduction among people who use drugs. He has led several large-scale health surveys of men who have sex with men (MSM), and African migrants, and has undertaken a number of qualitative studies that explore HIV transmission risk behaviour. Much of Adam’s work has explored the specific health and social care needs of people who have diagnosed HIV, and of people who use new psychoactive substances. He is currently a co-investigator of TRANSFORM – study of sexual health and well-being among MSM in Kenya and South Africa, and recently completed a mapping and appraisal of HIV prevention interventions for men who have sex with men in Eastern & Southern Africa. Adam has led or contributed to several studies of illicit drug use in sexual settings (‘chemsex’) and a full account of outputs on this topic can be found here.
